Situational Awareness - The Nassau County Police Department Homeland
Security has developed a customized Active Shooter. Awareness program
based off the FEMA IS-907 Active Shooter: What you can do. This course
was created in response to repeated requests from the public to provide
awareness level training on active shooter incidents.
The training is designed to highlight the importance of preparedness. By
providing an overview of response to everyday emergencies such as fire/
medical / suspicious item calls we identify techniques which might serve as
building blocks to prepare the individuals for response to a critical incident
such as an active shooter. We discuss the importance of planning and
organizing in advance as well as the need to have appropriate equipment
available. By focusing on situational awareness, we encourage participants
to be vigilant for suspicious behavior which could be indicators of a future attack
