"Siena: The Rise of Painting, 1300–1350" examines the pre-dawn of the Italian Renaissance and the pivotal role Sienese artists played, including Duccio, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini in defining Western painting. Siena was the site of phenomenal artistic innovation and activity in the decades leading up to the catastrophic plague that claimed the life of one-third of the city’s population, including every artist. Florence later assumed the role of leader at the center of the Renaissance half a century later. Professor Thomas Germano will discuss the art and artists of this extraordinary period in a visual lecture.
