This visual lecture examines John Singer Sargent’s (1856-1925) formative years as a young painter in Paris, the city the American living in Florence selected for his formal art training, essentially placing him in the epicenter of modernism, while catapulting him to the top of the late 19th century art world.  It was during this decade in the artist’s storied career, when Sargent first achieved recognition for ambitious portraits and bold canvases that pushed the boundaries of convention. During this time, he established his reputation, ultimately becoming the most sought out portraitist in Europe, England, and the United States.
