Program Description

Event Details

Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) is one of the most influential artists of the modern and post-modern periods. Over a six-decade career, Duchamp challenged the very definition of the object/artwork, and his art has been referenced by artists so frequently, the term “Duchampian” has become an understood term we use frequently to describe ready-made mass-produced objects incorporated as, or within a work of art. Duchamp contributed to Cubism, Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, Pop, and trompe l’oeil. His pursuits were marked by continuous reinvention and deliberate inconsistencies. The exhibit is showing first at MoMA, NYC from April 12 through August 22, 2026 before traveling to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the fall of 2026 and a smaller version presented in Paris’s Grand Palais in the spring of 2027. The MoMA and Philadelphia Museum will feature approximately 300 artworks offering today’s audiences the first opportunity to view the full breadth of Duchamp’s creative output. This exhibition marks the first retrospective of the artist’s work in the United States since 1973.
