Robert Redford was a major screen presence, with a career that spanned 60 years. He began on television, starred on Broadway in the 1960s and became one of the most successful actors of the 1970s and 1980s in films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and Out of Africa. He also directed and produced films, including Ordinary People for which he won the Academy Award as Best Director. He was a champion of environmental causes and founder of the Sundance Institute, home of the Sundance Film Festival for independent films. In spite of his fame, Redford did not seek attention and lived in Utah, away from the limelight of Hollywood.
