Program Description

Event Details

Fra Angelico (1395–1455) was trained in the late gothic painting style and he adapted the new principles of Renaissance art emerging in Florence in the early 1400’s by applying perspective space and direct light to model the figures. Fra Angelico’s artistic innovations are most unique because he was an ordained Dominican priest who applied deep spiritual values founded on a profound meditation of the sacred as reflected in the world.

Professor Thomas Germano will discuss the artist and his art in a visual presentation while focusing on the very special exhibition held at the Palazzo Strozzi and the Museo di San Marco in Firenze, Italy from September 25, 2025 through January 26, 2026 titled “Fra Angelico.”  Several of Fra Angelico’s works have been restored for this exhibition and altarpieces reunited for the first time in over two centuries.

The artworks by Fra Angelico will be discussed alongside early Renaissance painters: Lorenzo Monaco, Masaccio, and Filippo Lippi, and sculptors: Lorenzo Ghiberti, Michelozzo, and Luca della Robbia.
