Program Description

Event Details

Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1653) was one of the great painters of her time. During this period, women were not believed capable of true artistry, but with a supportive artist-father, extraordinary talent, persistence, and bravado, Artemisia quickly established herself as a Roman Baroque follower of Caravaggio. Just as her career began gaining momentum in Baroque Rome, a series of devastating betrayals destroyed the foundation of her life and art. Artemisia Gentileschi transcended trauma to become one of the most successful artists of her time and an inspiration to women throughout the ages. Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture about the artist’s life and art amid the turbulent and competitive era of the Italian Baroque.
